A United States national has been ordered to pay a fine of 3,000,000 Malawian Kwacha (MWK) by a Blantyre Magistrate’s Court after landing an aircraft at Bakili Muluzi International Airport without proper authorization.

The pilot, Terry Lee Jenningson, was taken into custody on Wednesday following a flight from South Africa. According to Southern Region Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa, authorities detained the pilot after discovering that the aircraft touched down without fulfilling the necessary regulatory procedures.

Magistrate Paul Chiotcha handed down the sentence, giving Jenningson the option of paying the fine or serving a one-year prison term. Following the ruling, the pilot paid the penalty, enabling the aircraft to be cleared for departure from Malawi.

To put the financial penalty into perspective, the 3 million Malawian Kwacha fine is equivalent to approximately 33,000 Zambian Kwacha (ZMW) at current exchange rates. The flight had reportedly entered Malawi to pick up a family that had been on holiday and transport them onward to Portugal.
