The MK Party is also securing representation, while parties such as the Patriotic Alliance, IFP and VF Plus are adding to the increasingly diverse make-up of local government.
With 56% of the results still outstanding, the political picture is far from settled. The coming hours of counting could bring further changes to party standings and the balance of power in municipalities across the country.
South Africans are watching closely as the numbers continue to come in. Who will emerge strongest when the final results are declared?
