ANNA MWITWA TO PETITION MUFULIRA CENTRAL PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION.
Aspiring Mufulira Central parliamentary candidate Anna Mwitwa has announced her decision to petition the outcome of the just-ended parliamentary election in the constituency.
Ms Mwitwa said that her decision follows concerns over alleged electoral irregularities which she believes require judicial scrutiny to determine whether the election was conducted in accordance with the law.
Among the issues she intends to raise in court are alleged instances where G20 forms and other electoral documents were not signed by her duly appointed agents.
She has also raised concerns over the alleged movement of ballot papers in a vehicle reportedly associated with the UPND candidate, which she says was later apprehended by police.
Mwitwa further alleges that money was distributed to churches and voters in the period leading to the election, while mealie meal, cooking oil and other material benefits were allegedly distributed to voters before polling.
She says evidence relating to these claims will be presented through the appropriate legal process.
The legal practitioner says the petition is not about rejecting democracy but defending it, arguing that credible concerns surrounding an election should be subjected to judicial scrutiny.
She has also urged her supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while allowing the courts to determine the matter.
