ANTHROPOLOGIST URGES OPPOSITION TO INTENSIFY USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO COUNTER RALLY RESTRICTIONS
By Raphael Mulenga
Social and Political Anthropologist Dr. James Musonda has urged opposition political parties to intensify the use of social media as a key campaign tool amid what he describes as increasing restrictions on traditional political mobilization.
Commenting on the police’s refusal to allow the opposition to hold public rallies, Dr. Musonda says parties must adapt to the evolving political environment by prioritizing online outreach, as opportunities for rallies and other physical mobilization activities become limited.
He has emphasized that beyond online engagement, parties should also take advantage of everyday spaces such as public transport, households, and bus stations to connect with citizens.
Dr. Musonda has also highlighted the importance of strategic planning, encouraging opposition parties to prepare alternative approaches in the event that the ruling party secures another electoral victory.
