BAD NEWS FOR ZIMBABWE AS THE UNITED STATES ENDS HEALTH FUNDING FOR KEY HIV, TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA PROGRAMMES AFTER HARARE REJECTS A PROPOSED HEALTH AGREEMENT OVER DATA-SHARING AND SOVEREIGNTY CONCERNS

The United States has announced that it will end funding for Zimbabwe’s health programmes at the end of September following the collapse of negotiations over a proposed bilateral health agreement.

According to officials, the proposed deal included provisions related to access to sensitive health data and biological samples. Zimbabwean authorities said they could not accept some of the conditions, citing concerns over national sovereignty, data protection and whether the country would benefit from medical innovations developed using Zimbabwean data and biological resources.

The funding supported programmes focused on HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, as well as disease outbreak preparedness. The United States has been one of Zimbabwe’s major health sector donors for many years.

US Ambassador Pamela Tremont said Washington plans to shift its relationship with Zimbabwe toward economic, trade and investment cooperation rather than health and humanitarian assistance.

The decision has raised concerns about the future of several health programmes that have relied heavily on external support, particularly those dealing with HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
