BREAKING: Barack Obama BLASTS Trump’s “APPALLING” treatment of Ilhan Omar – warns that if Americans tolerate this abuse of power, no one is safe from becoming the next target!
Former President Barack Obama has delivered a blistering public condemnation of the Trump administration’s attempt to investigate and potentially deport Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, accusing the president of turning federal law enforcement into a weapon against his political enemies.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama wrote Sunday. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”
Obama’s intervention comes six days after federal agents raided Omar’s Washington-area home, seizing her phone and personal records as part of an investigation into immigration paperwork dating back more than two decades.
Obama pointed to the central issue in the dispute: Omar’s citizenship was obtained when she was a minor, through her father’s naturalization. Investigators are now scrutinizing whether the family’s paperwork was accurate.
“Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” Obama wrote.
Omar arrived in the United States as a child refugee from Somalia and became a citizen in 2000 at age 17. The administration is combing through her family’s immigration records in an effort to find something they can use to try to deport her, although no evidence of wrongdoing by Omar has been publicly established.
The former president connected Omar’s treatment to the administration’s other investigations and prosecutions involving Trump’s adversaries, including NY Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey.
Trump has repeatedly demanded that Omar be deported, despite her having been an American citizen for more than a quarter-century, and he’s using the waning days of his majority to try to make it happen.
“The fact that any president … is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views.”
“Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her – or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”
