Baryamureeba Challenges Kijanangoma’s Tooro Installation, Says Grave Ritual Was ‘Null and Void’
The battle over who should occupy the Tooro throne has taken a fresh and potentially explosive legal turn.
Former Makerere University Vice Chancellor and 2016 presidential candidate Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba has challenged the recent declaration of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama of Tooro.
Baryamureeba argues that the ritual in which Kijanangoma threw nine coffee beans into the grave of the late King Oyo during the burial ceremony was legally “null and void”, insisting that Kijanangoma had not been lawfully installed as king at the time.
He has now called on President Yoweri Museveni to reject the installation and allow the succession dispute to be settled through the courts, guided by the late King Oyo’s will.
The remarks come shortly after reports that the Attorney General advised President Museveni that King Oyo’s will should take precedence in determining his successor.
According to a letter dated September 12, 2026, the Attorney General reportedly advised that Oyo’s wishes regarding his successor should be respected unless the will is successfully challenged in court
While the Babiito royal clan selected Kijanangoma, members of Oyo’s family have maintained that the late king had identified his biological son as the rightful heir in his will.
Now, with traditional clan decisions on one side and the late king’s reported wishes on the other, the Tooro succession battle appears to be moving beyond royal rituals and deep into the legal arena.
The Tooro throne remains at the centre of a growing storm.
