Borders Cannot Shield Individuals from Justice

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Special Assistant to the President for Legal Affairs CHRISTOPHER MUNDIA says the apprehension of former Petauke Member of Parliament EMMANUEL JAY BANDA should serve as a reminder that social media must not be used for unlawful activities.

In a message posted on his Facebook page, Mr MUNDIA warned that the law would catch up with individuals who abuse social media to insult others, promote radicalisation or threaten the life of the Head of State.

He said the right to criticise the Government comes with responsibility and should not be abused to promote criminal activities.

Mr MUNDIA said threatening the life of a Head of State is a serious matter that threatens national peace and security.

He further said digital platforms are not beyond the reach of law enforcement agencies, regardless of where individuals operate from.

Meanwhile, Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes –SACCORD- Executive Director ARTHUR MUYUNDA said Mr. BANDA’s apprehension should serve as a warning to citizens against disregarding the law through insults and defamation directed at the President.

And UPND Media Director MARK SIMUUWE said the development demonstrates that international borders cannot shield individuals from the law.-ZNBC
