BOTSWANA CITIZENS BLAST PRESIDENT DUMA BOKO, ACCUSING HIM OF FOCUSING MORE ON HIS IMAGE AND FASHIONABLE PUBLIC APPEARANCES THAN DELIVERING THE CHANGE HE PROMISED DURING HIS ELECTION CAMPAIGN
A growing number of Botswana citizens on social media are expressing frustration with President Duma Boko, claiming that the high expectations many voters had during the election campaign have not yet translated into the improvements they hoped to see.
Many Batswana say they voted for change with the expectation that the new administration would move quickly to address unemployment, create economic opportunities for young people, improve service delivery and ease the rising cost of living. However, some citizens argue that progress has been slower than expected and that ordinary people are still waiting to feel the impact of the promises made during the election period.
Critics argue that while the President remains highly visible at public events and continues to attract attention for his stylish outfits and public appearances, many communities are still struggling with the same challenges they faced before the election. On social media, some commentators have even described Boko as a “fashion star,” saying he is often seen confidently walking into events in elegant clothing while citizens continue to demand jobs, investment and faster economic growth.
Others have questioned whether enough has been done to tackle youth unemployment, improve living standards and stimulate business activity. Some citizens believe the government needs to move with greater urgency to prove that the political change witnessed during the election will result in meaningful improvements for ordinary people.
However, supporters of President Boko strongly disagree with these criticisms. They argue that he inherited long-standing economic and social challenges that cannot be solved within a few months. They point out that Botswana’s economy has faced pressure from declining diamond revenues, global economic uncertainty and years of structural challenges that require long-term solutions rather than quick fixes.
Supporters also highlight that Boko’s government has already begun introducing reforms aimed at economic diversification, attracting investment, strengthening governance and creating opportunities beyond the country’s traditional dependence on the diamond sector. They argue that such reforms take time before their benefits become visible to the public.
Political analysts note that expectations are particularly high because Boko led a historic political transition that ended decades of dominance by the previous ruling party. As a result, many citizens expected immediate change, while others believe the administration should be given more time to implement its agenda.
The debate has sparked intense discussion across Botswana, with some citizens demanding faster action and accountability, while others continue to defend the President and insist that his performance should ultimately be judged by the long-term results of his policies rather than his public image or personal style.
For now, one thing is clear: President Duma Boko remains one of the most closely watched leaders in Southern Africa, with both supporters and critics keeping a close eye on whether his government will deliver the transformation many Batswana are hoping to see.
