Botswana withdraws from 2028 AFCON bid

Botswana has withdrawn from the joint bid with Zimbabwe and South Africa to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, leaving the two countries to continue their proposal.

Botswana pulled out after the government declined to provide the financial guarantee required for the bid, citing financial constraints and competing priorities.

The country subsequently missed CAF’s September 14 deadline to submit its bidding documents.

The original three-nation proposal included matches in Gaborone and Francistown, with upgrades planned for the National Stadium in Gaborone.

Zimbabwe and South Africa will now proceed with their joint bid, with CAF expected to assess the submitted proposals before selecting the 2028 host.
