BRAZIL VOTES TODAY: BOLSONARO’S SON POISED TO END LULA’S REGIME AFTER YEARS OF PERSECUTION

Brazil is at the polls right now in a runoff that could mark the biggest political reversal in the country’s modern history. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of the imprisoned former president, entered this day as the favorite after topping the first round against the aging leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The race is tight, but the momentum has shifted hard against the current government.

Jair Bolsonaro survived an assassination attempt, was banned from running, and is now serving a 27-year prison sentence on charges of plotting a coup after the 2022 election. His supporters call that election stolen. They call the charges political. They see the same playbook used against Donald Trump in the United States: weaponize the courts, silence the opposition, and hope the movement dies. It did not die. Crowds in yellow and green have packed the streets. The video of those rallies shows the scale of the backlash.

Lula’s side framed the election as a defense of sovereignty against foreign influence. Voters appear more focused on crime, the economy, and what they view as elite overreach. Flávio has promised to free his father and his supporters if he wins. That message has landed. Never before has a candidate who finished second in the first round flipped the runoff, yet the numbers heading into today gave Flávio the edge and left Lula scrambling.

The people who locked up Jair Bolsonaro thought they had ended the threat. Instead they handed his son a platform and turned the former president into a symbol. You can jail one man. You cannot jail the voters who still line up for him. Today Brazil decides whether that decision stands.
