Burkina Faso Acquires China’s Sky Dragon 30 Air Defense System

Burkina Faso has reportedly acquired China’s Sky Dragon 30 (SD-30) air defense system as part of efforts to strengthen its military capabilities.

🔸 Developed by China’s Norinco, the Sky Dragon 30 is a mobile surface-to-air missile system designed to engage aircraft, drones and cruise missiles. The system is advertised with an engagement range of up to 30 kilometers and an altitude capability of up to 18 kilometers, depending on the target and configuration.

🔸 Footage circulating online reportedly shows Burkina Faso’s president operating the missile system, while a mobile air-surveillance radar associated with the system is also visible.

🔸 China has expanded its military cooperation with Burkina Faso in recent years, with Beijing supplying various forms of defense equipment, including armored vehicles, rocket launchers and self-propelled mortars.

The reported acquisition comes as Burkina Faso continues efforts to expand its air-defense and military capabilities amid persistent security challenges across the Sahel region.
