 BURKINA FASO LEADER IBRAHIM TRAORÉ SPARKS DEBATE OVER CONSTITUTION AND RELIGIOUS INFLUENCE

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has reportedly sparked a wide debate after making strong remarks about the relationship between the country’s constitution, religion, and foreign religious education.

Traoré was quoted as saying that no religious law, including Islamic Sharia, should be placed above Burkina Faso’s constitution, arguing that the state’s legal framework must remain the highest authority.

In remarks attributed to him, Traoré said:

> “In Burkina Faso, the constitution is above all religions. I am concerned about young Burkinabè who go to study in Saudi Arabia and return wanting to impose the ideas they learned on society. That is not allowed here. If you do not accept the laws of the country, you can return to where you studied.”

The comments have triggered strong reactions, with some critics accusing the leader of targeting Islamic values, while supporters argue that he is defending the principle of a secular state and national sovereignty.

Burkina Faso is a religiously diverse country where Muslims make up a significant part of the population, alongside Christians and followers of traditional beliefs. The debate comes as the country continues to face major security challenges linked to armed groups and political instability.

The remarks have renewed discussions about the balance between religious freedom, national laws, and the role of foreign religious influence in Burkina Faso’s future.
