Burkina Faso President Captain Ibrahim Traoré Bans Sharia Law, Calls on Students to Study Science and Technology Instead
Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has declared that his country will not adopt Sharia law.
Speaking to his people, Traoré expressed his frustration over the number of Burkinabè students studying Sharia and Islamic law in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.
Around 800 to 1,000 Burkinabè nationals are currently pursuing Islamic legal studies in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.
Traoré said that Burkina Faso doesn’t need Sharia law Islamic professionals.
He said Burkina Faso needs more graduates in science, technology, engineering, and other fields that can directly contribute to economic transformation and growth.
Speaking about the future of Burkina Faso, Traoré, who is a Muslim, emphasized that religious freedom would remain protected in Burkina Faso and that his country will never institute Sharia law.
“I am a Muslim, but everyone in Burkina Faso has the right to practice their own religion. There will never be Sharia law in this country,” Traoré said.
Traoré has urged Burkinabè students to reconsider their educational choices, saying Burkina Faso requires expertise that can help address challenges in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, industry, and technology.
He further stated that the government intends to encourage the return of these students studying Sharia Law in Saudi and warned that those who refuse to return could face consequences.
