Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Traoré Vows to End Raw Resource Exports to Western Countries
Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has announced a policy aimed at strengthening national control over the country’s natural resources, declaring that Burkina Faso intends to move away from exporting raw materials directly to Western countries.
«“We will never export raw resources to Western countries again,” Traoré said.»
The announcement reflects the government’s broader ambition to take greater control of Burkina Faso’s mineral and natural wealth, develop domestic processing industries, and ensure that more of the economic value generated from the country’s resources remains within the country.
Rather than exporting unprocessed raw materials, the government aims to promote local transformation and industrial development, allowing Burkina Faso to produce higher-value goods domestically before they reach international markets.
The move is part of Traoré’s wider push for economic sovereignty and national self-reliance, with his government seeking to reduce foreign dependence and increase state and domestic control over strategically important resources.
Supporters of the policy argue that exporting raw materials often allows foreign countries and companies to capture much of the value created through processing, while resource-producing nations receive only a fraction of the final economic benefit.
