CANADA LOOKS BEYOND TRUMP’S AMERICA — EUROPE OFFERS A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON TRUST
Canada is moving forward with Europe, expanding cooperation on energy, investment and economic security while seeking greater independence from Washington’s political uncertainty.
At the Montréal summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney and European leaders launched their Alliance for the Future. A signed agreement opens the way for European Investment Bank financing in Canada, with critical minerals an early priority. The partners also committed to deeper energy cooperation, including an LNG feasibility study, electricity grids, battery storage and nuclear technologies.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen captured the ambition plainly:
“We can no longer let ourselves be shackled by the limits of the old world order.”
She called for “partnerships that are built on trust”—a message with particular weight as countries reconsider dependencies that can become instruments of political pressure.
The contrast with Trump’s approach is striking. While Washington pursues Russian diesel and Belarusian potash, Canada and Europe are strengthening ties between democratic partners, seeking reliable supplies and investment with a longer horizon than the next political confrontation.
Canada cannot change its geography. But it can expand its choices. When longstanding partners are treated as bargaining targets, they have every reason to build stronger relationships elsewhere.
Later in her speech, von der Leyen paid tribute to Canada’s support for Ukraine from the beginning of Putin’s full-scale invasion. She recognized Canadians’ deep Ukrainian connections, the welcome given to people fleeing the war and Canada’s work to help return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
That recognition deserves emphasis. Canada’s contribution reaches beyond diplomacy and funding: it means shelter for displaced families, support for Ukraine’s defense and a commitment to children who must be brought home.
A partnership built on trust is measured by what its members do when others need them. Canada has stood with Ukraine—and Europe is recognizing that solidarity as a foundation for their shared future.
