CCMG SAYS POLICE’S SLOW RESPONSE TO POLITICAL VIOLENCE WORRYING AHEAD OF POLLS

The Christian Churches Monitoring Group -CCMG- says the Zambia Police’s inaction or slow response to cases of violence is worrying and undermining public confidence ahead of the 13th August General Election.
CCMG Programmes Manager Peter Mwanang’ombe says from its observations, the group has recorded 52 incidents of political violence since the start of campaigns, with police only acting on 52 percent of these cases.
Mr. Mwanang’ombe says the police have not been effective in addressing politically motivated violence, adding that the figures indicate limited action has been taken against perpetrators.
He has told Phoenix News that this slow response is weakening the institution’s ability to maintain law and order during the election period.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mwanang’ombe has expressed concern over the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s silence on reports that alleged UPND cadres have been blocking political opponents from accessing designated campaign venues.
He says such actions are a violation of the Electoral Code of Conduct and has urged the Commission to take appropriate action against any political party found to be in breach of the electoral rules.
The Zambia Police says it will issue a statement particularly on the recent Mongu incident once it receives a comprehensive report.

It makes the President’s condemnation of political violence sound hollow. Where is the SG of UPND? Or maybe he is the one issuing orders to disrupt opposition rallies. He’s been very quiet in all this.
There’s the case of the rogue thug who caused mayhem in Mazabuka and assaulted Mr. Nkombo. What is the progress on his case? When is he appearing in court or has the case gone cold?
