CHIEF JUSTICE CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AT SUPREME COURT AS SECURITY IS TIGHTENED

Chief Justice Dr Mumba Malila has strongly condemned an act of violence on the Supreme Court grounds, describing it as a direct assault on the administration of justice and the dignity of the Judiciary.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dr Malila said security at Judiciary premises had been intensified to protect judicial officers, court staff and members of the public.

The Chief Justice warned that violence and unruly conduct within court premises would not be tolerated. He further stated that law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident and that those responsible would be dealt with according to the law.

The condemnation follows reports that former Patriotic Front Secretary-General Davies Mwila was assaulted at the Supreme Court while attending proceedings relating to the Lima Constituency election petition in support of MP Kelvin Kaunda.

Reports indicate that a confrontation allegedly escalated into a physical attack. However, the identities and political affiliations of the alleged assailants have not been independently established.

The incident has triggered political exchanges, with the United Party for National Development condemning the reported assault while challenging allegations linking suspected UPND cadres to the incident.

The party has called for an impartial police investigation and challenged PF–Pamodzi Alliance National Youth IPS Given Gift Chibale to provide evidence supporting statements attributed to him.

The Judiciary has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rule of law and maintaining a safe and orderly environment at court premises.
