China Launches Smart Dragon-3 Rocket, Expanding AI-Powered Space Capabilities
China has successfully launched a Smart Dragon-3 (SD-3) carrier rocket from a sea-based platform, placing a new group of advanced satellites into orbit in the latest milestone for the country’s rapidly expanding space program.
According to Chinese officials, the mission is aimed at strengthening China’s capabilities in AI-powered Earth observation and remote sensing. The satellites are designed to process large volumes of data more efficiently, enabling faster analysis of high-resolution imagery for applications including environmental monitoring, urban planning, agriculture, disaster response, and maritime surveillance.
A key feature of the mission is the use of artificial intelligence technologies that allow satellites to perform more data processing directly in orbit, reducing the amount of raw data that must be transmitted back to Earth.
