China Leveraging Russia Partnership to Gain Battlefield Lessons from Ukraine War, The Economist Reports
According to The Economist, China is using its increasingly close military partnership with Russia to acquire valuable combat experience and modern military knowledge drawn from the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The report says Beijing is closely studying the lessons Russia has learned on the battlefield, viewing the conflict as a real-world testing ground for emerging military technologies, tactics, and operational strategies that could shape future warfare.
Among the areas of greatest interest to China are the large-scale use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), advanced submarine stealth techniques, missile defense systems, electronic warfare, intelligence gathering, and battlefield command and control. Chinese military planners are reportedly analyzing how these capabilities have performed under combat conditions and identifying ways to incorporate similar innovations into the People’s Liberation Army.
Western officials cited in the report have expressed concern that China’s access to these battlefield insights could significantly strengthen its military capabilities. They warn that the experience gained through cooperation with Russia may improve Beijing’s readiness for a potential future conflict involving Taiwan or other regional flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific.
The report underscores growing Western fears that the deepening strategic relationship between Moscow and Beijing extends beyond diplomatic and economic ties, increasingly encompassing military cooperation, intelligence sharing, and the exchange of operational knowledge with potentially far-reaching security implications.
