China says it opposes US sanctions after Bessent warning on Iranian airlines
China said on Tuesday it opposed what it described as illegal sanctions that lack a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council, after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned countries against providing services to Iranian airlines.
Bessent said on Monday that Iranian airlines would be unable to operate globally from September 23 and warned that countries providing them with services including credit or fuel would be cut off from the US dollar system.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a regular news briefing after being asked whether China would continue to accept Iranian flights scheduled to land in Guangzhou and Shanghai.
“China has consistently opposed illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council,” Guo said, according to the Beijing Daily report.
Guo did not directly answer whether China would continue to accept the Iranian flights.
