THE Chipata Magistrates’ Court has referred an 18-year-old boy who stole motor vehicle keys from paramount chief Mpezeni to hospital to ascertain his right age.

Zondwayo Jere pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing from a motor vehicle and appeared in court on Tuesday for presentation of facts.
When his case was called by senior public prosecutor Jeff Mwanabeene, Jere raised his hand while in the dock and informed the court that he
was unwell.

But magistrate Moses Phiri who is handling the matter informed him that the matter was going to take a few minutes.

“You are saying you are 18 years old but I don’t believe it, so I am referring you to the hospital to ascertain your real age. The facts will only be read once your correct age is known,’’ Magistrate Phiri said. ‘’You should also come with your parents when the case comes up next time. I task PP (public prosecutor) and court clerk to take you to hospital.”

The matter has since been adjourned to March 29, 2022 for mention.

And Jere complained that inmates at the cell where he has been remanded at Namuseche were subjected to a lot of restrictions.
He said prison authorities introduced the restrictions after one of the inmates attempted to escape.

“I have one complaint; we are not staying well at the prison. There are a lot of restrictions, you have to ask for permission to go to the toilet; even when you want to go and fetch water. Things are not okay,
life is very difficult,” complained Jere.
But magistrate Phiri said he was aware of the challenges that inmates faced. S
