CHITAMBALA MWEWA VOWS TO ENFORCE TRADING REGULATIONS IN LUSAKA CITY

By Justina Matandiko

Lusaka Mayor-elect Chitambala Mwewa says there is enough trading space in the city to accommodate street vendors as the deadline for them to vacate the streets takes effect today.

Mr. Mwewa says Lusaka has about 15,000 available trading spaces within and around 28 markets, compared to about 8,000 registered street vendors.

Speaking when he featured on the Tuesday edition of Let the People Talk programme on Phoenix FM, Mr Mwewa says vendors should make use of designated markets within their localities instead of trading from streets, bus stations and other undesignated areas.

He says previous efforts to remove street vendors from the streets failed due to lack of political will, with some people having vested interests in allowing street vending to continue.

Mr. Mwewa says the city will enforce trading regulations, arguing that Lusaka can only function properly when residents follow the rules and use designated trading spaces.

He has also accused council police of being part of the problem, saying the 395 officers currently deployed will have their roles redefined under the new administration.
