CSEIFZ URGES ECZ TO RESUME RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENTS WHERE NO VIOLENCE WAS RECORDED

The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIFZ) strongly appeals to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to immediately resume the announcement of election results in areas where no violence or serious disruption has been recorded.
While suspending results in isolated constituencies affected by violence may be necessary to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, halting the announcement of results across the country risks creating unnecessary tension, uncertainty and suspicion. A blanket suspension could undermine public confidence and fuel fears of manipulation.
We are deeply concerned by reports that polling staff have been attacked while carrying out their duties. This raises serious questions about the protection being provided to electoral officials. What is the role of the police and other security personnel at polling stations if electoral officers can be attacked while performing their constitutional duties
Security personnel have a responsibility to protect electoral officers, safeguard election materials and ensure citizens can exercise their democratic rights freely and without intimidation. Failure to do so risks eroding confidence in both the electoral process and the institutions mandated to protect it.
Zambia’s democracy and international reputation must be protected. An election compromised by violence, intimidation or unnecessary delays can leave deep scars on the nation. Investors, international observers and regional partners are watching closely, and the credibility of this election matters to Zambia’s future.
We therefore appeal to both political camps, the UPND and the NNRUP, to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law and put the interests of Zambia above partisan considerations. Violence and political confrontation only weaken the institutions upon which our Republic depends.
CSEIFZ reminds the ECZ that its constitutional responsibility is to deliver a credible, transparent and verifiable election. Where results have been properly processed and no violence or serious irregularities have been reported, those results should be announced without unnecessary delay. Constituencies affected by violence can be addressed separately through the appropriate legal and electoral mechanisms.
The people of Zambia have a right to timely information about an election in which they have participated. Prolonged uncertainty only creates unnecessary anxiety and tension.
Zambia must not be derailed by fear, violence, mismanagement or indecision. The people’s voice must be heard, and their votes must be respected.
