DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD MEMORIAL COMMEMORATED IN NDOLA
The 65th Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial was commemorated yesterday, honouring the legacy of the late United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, after whom Dag Hammarskjöld Constituency is named.
The memorial recalled Hammarskjöld’s peace mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in September 1961. His plane crashed near Ndola on September 17, 1961, while he was travelling to meet Katanga Province Prime Minister Moïse Tshombe in an effort to help resolve the Congo crisis.
Despite several investigations over the years, questions surrounding the exact cause of the crash remain. Hammarskjöld’s death has consequently remained an important part of Ndola and Zambia’s history.
Speaking during the commemoration, Dag Hammarskjöld Constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Ezra Tembo said the constituency proudly carries the name of a global statesman who dedicated his life to the pursuit of peace.
He called on residents to uphold the values of peace, unity and service associated with Hammarskjöld’s legacy.
