DEMOCRATS WIN HOUSE AS HAKEEM JEFFRIES POISED TO BECOME FIRST BLACK SPEAKER
Democrats have won control of the United States House of Representatives, putting Hakeem Jeffries in line to become the first Black Speaker in American history.
The victory ends four years of Republican control and gives Democrats greater power to challenge President Donald Trump’s agenda and investigate his administration during the final two years of his presidency
Jeffries, who leads House Democrats, is now the strong favourite to take the Speaker’s gavel when the new Congress convenes in January. His election would mark a historic breakthrough, placing a Black American at the helm of the chamber for the first time.
The speakership will be decided through a formal vote by members of the incoming House.
