Dr Nathan Cofnas the academic who investigated Prof Jason Arday’s academic work and led to his downfall.
Confas himself was fired from Cambridge after he argued that if meritocracy was to be adhered to Black people would not hold high profile positions outside sports and entertainment, because they are less intelligent. Confas’s scientific racism advocacy has resulted in controversy over his appointments in different universities.
Perhaps what people don’t know is that the most extreme racist scientific research on human intelligence in the 20th century was conducted in Nairobi in 1930.
This research was conducted at Mathari Mental Hospital and Kabete Juvenile detention Center. In a letter to the Eugenics Society DR. HL Gordon the Medical Superintendent Mathare Mental Hospital wrote:
” I am engaged in a research into the question of very high level of intellectual disability in the natives.I am not yet prepared to speak as to the conclusions beyond saying that in certain directions they promise to be of a surprising nature in reference to the question of the normal standard of native “mentality”.
The first research that Gordon undertook on African intelligence was at Kabete Juvenile detention Center. According to him not one out of the 219 inmates at Kabete attained the European standard of normal intelligence.
He claimed to have found that out of the 219 inmates.
144 were idiots
45 were imbeciles
24 were border line normal
6 were low-grade normal.
The research also noted that the intelligence of a middle aged native Kenyan was equivalent to that of a European boy between the age of 7 and 8
Following the research, Gordon wrote a note in the East African standard suggesting that the failure to diagnose large number of idiots was the cause of mental backwardness in natives.
Supporting Gordon’s findings was Dr F.W Vint a pathologist, who after examining skulls of dead Africans in Nairobi claimed that Africans had limited grey matter compared to Europeans.
Ironically Gordon was fired from the Hospital after it emerged that he needed assistance more than his patients. He used to have sex with a small lion cub in front of his patients in the wards.
