DR. NEVERS SEKWILA MUMBA HEADS EISA OBSERVOR MISSION TO LIBERIA

FORMER Zambian Republican Vice President, Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba will on Wednesday leave for Monrovia where he will be leading a team of observers to Liberia’s general elections scheduled to take place on 10th October, 2023.

Dr. Mumba will serve as the Head of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) which has deployed a full-fledged Team of both long term and short-term teams of observers to Liberia.

According to a statement issued by EISA in 4th September, 2023, the team comprises Electoral short-term observers (STOs), mainly drawn from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and academia from all across the continent of Africa.

EISA is a not-for-profit organisation promoting credible elections, citizen participation, and strong political institutions for sustainable democracy in Africa. EISA works towards an African continent where democratic governance, human rights and citizen participation are upheld in a peaceful environment.

Dr.Mumba says the EISA team of observers will be deployed in all the regions and specifically, across the 15 provinces of Liberia where they will observe the final stages of the political parties’ campaigns, elections day procedures and results aggregation processes.

The EISA Mission’s assessment of the electoral process will be guided by the principles and obligations set out in the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration of the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, the Declaration of Principles on International Election Observation (DoP) and the Principles for Election Management, Monitoring and Observation (PEMMO) as well as the legal framework governing the elections in the Republic of Liberia.

Dr. Mumba and the EISA Electoral Observation Mission are expected to issue a preliminary statement on its findings after election day.

EISA missions have in the past been led by former Presidents and technical experts over the years including, H.E Goodluck Jonathan Former President of Nigeria, H.E. John Dramani Mahama Former President of Ghana, H.E. Caasam Uteem Former President Mauritius and H.E Rupiah Bwezani Banda, Late Former President of Zambia.

Mumba is highly regarded as a champion of Democracy on the continent following his recent tour of duty as Head of the SADC Electoral Observer Mission to Zimbabwe where his team became the first SADC observer Mission to call out shortcomings in the electoral processes in the just ended elections in Zimbabwe.
