ECZ ASKS COURT TO DISMISS MKUSHI NORTH PETITION, UPHOLDS ELECTION OF MABVUTO NYIRENDA.
15th September, 2026.
Mkushi North — The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has asked the High Court to dismiss the parliamentary election petition filed for Mkushi North Constituency.
The petition was filed by Mr. Topson P. Kunda, who contested the seat on the UPND ticket, challenging the outcome of the 2026 Parliamentary Election.
In its response before the Court, ECZ states that the election in Mkushi North was conducted in accordance with applicable electoral laws and procedures and that the election was free and fair.
ECZ further confirms that Mr. Mabvuto Nyirenda of the NRPUP was duly declared elected after receiving the highest number of valid votes, with 10,232 votes against 7,738 votes for the petitioner.
Importantly, the Commission has urged the Honourable Court to dismiss the petition for want of sufficient proof of the allegations and to uphold the election of Mr. Nyirenda as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Mkushi North.
Speaking to this reporter, Mr. Nyirenda appealed to residents to remain calm, peaceful and united as they await the determination of the Honourable Court.
He called on all stakeholders to respect the judicial process and to keep focus on the development of Mkushi North.
“The people spoke through the ballot. Now we allow the law to take its course,” he said.
