ECZ MAY EXTEND VOTER REGISTRATION – VEEP
By: Thomas Afroman Mwale
Vice President Mutale Nalumango has announced that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will only consider extending the ongoing mass voter registration exercise after reviewing progress against its national target of 3.5 million voters.
Delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament, Mrs. Nalumango said any extension, if granted, would be brief, stressing the importance of efficiency and prudent use of public resources.
With just ten days remaining before the initial deadline, the Vice President revealed that ECZ has so far registered approximately 290,000 voters nationwide a figure well below the target.
She acknowledged the challenge but urged eligible citizens to turn out in large numbers to register.
The Veep also disclosed that, in response to public calls for mobile issuance of National Registration Cards (NRCs), the Ministry of Home Affairs is now issuing NRCs in previously underserved areas to support the voter registration process.
While expressing concern about the financial implications of extending the registration period, she assured Parliament that ECZ is closely monitoring progress and will base its decision on data and logistical assessments.
