BREAKING | ECZ orders fresh parliamentary election in Mandevu after results documents destroyed
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has ordered a fresh parliamentary election in Mandevu Constituency, Lusaka, following a security incident which prevented the declaration of National Assembly results from the August 13 general election.
In a statement issued Friday, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission received an official report from the Lusaka District Electoral Officer indicating that unknown individuals attacked the Mandevu totalling centre during the aggregation of results.
According to ECZ, the attackers destroyed result transmission kits and fled with all election documentation, leaving the returning officer unable to declare a winner in the parliamentary election.
The Commission has consequently resolved to conduct a fresh election in Mandevu.
“In view of this, the Commission has resolved to hold a by-election for Mandevu Constituency on a date to be communicated in due course,” Kasaro said
The decision means voters in one of Lusaka’s major urban constituencies will return to the polls to determine their parliamentary representative.
ECZ has not yet announced the date for the fresh election.
