🇪🇬 Egypt Draws Attention as Nuclear Power Ambitions Come Under Scrutiny

All eyes are increasingly turning toward Egypt, as international observers watch the country’s expanding nuclear energy programme and debate its potential long-term strategic implications.

Egypt has not publicly expressed any ambition to develop nuclear weapons and remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, the construction of its first nuclear power plant at El-Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast has intensified attention on the country’s nuclear capabilities.

The estimated $30 billion project is being developed in partnership with Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom.

Former Trump special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg has previously warned that the emergence of a nuclear-armed Iran could encourage other countries in the region, including Egypt, to reconsider their strategic options.

While Egypt’s El-Dabaa project is officially a civilian nuclear energy programme, analysts continue to closely monitor nuclear developments across the Middle East amid growing regional tensions and concerns over nuclear proliferation.
