Esther Mwitumwa becomes the second woman in Zambia to be charged with treason after Princes Nakatindi Wina
Esther Mwitumwa (2026), the daughter of former diplomat Ambassador Martha Mwitumwa-Lungu, was formally served with a trumped up treason charge on November 5, 2026.
The state alleges that she conspired to overthrow the government while serving as an administrator for an opposition political coalition (the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance Secretariat).
Princess Nakatindi Wina was formally charged with treason on March 5, 1998, by the Zambian government.
The charges were connected to a failed military coup attempt against President Frederick Chiluba on October 28, 1997.
