EXPLOSIVES FOUND AT GERMAN POWER HUB AS EUROPE’S SABOTAGE THREAT GROWS
German police discovered several improvised explosive and incendiary devices at the Turnow-Preilack substation in Brandenburg, an important hub connected to the nearby Jänschwalde coal-fired power plant.
Several power lines were briefly interrupted, but grid operator 50Hertz restored service and the wider electricity supply was not disrupted. No injuries were reported.
Authorities believe the apparent objective was to trigger a large-scale power outage. The attempt failed, but that does not make the incident less serious. Someone brought multiple explosive devices to a critical part of Germany’s electricity network and came close enough to cause damage.
No perpetrator or motive has been identified, and responsibility must not be assigned before investigators establish the evidence. Yet Europe cannot continue treating each attempted arson, explosion or intrusion at an energy or defense facility as an isolated curiosity.
The growing frequency of these incidents demands stronger surveillance, hardened infrastructure and coordinated intelligence across Europe. Where responsibility is proven, consequences must follow. Waiting until one of these attacks succeeds catastrophically is not a security strategy.
