FINANCIAL TIMES: ZELENSKYY CONSIDERING REPLACING COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF SYRSKYI
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is considering replacing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, according to the Financial Times, which cites officials familiar with the discussions.
The newspaper reports that Zelenskyy is expected to meet with senior military commanders this weekend to assess the battlefield situation and evaluate potential candidates for the role. According to the FT’s sources, the president would only move forward with a leadership change if a successor could ensure a smooth transition while maintaining Ukraine’s defenses along the roughly 1,200-kilometer (750-mile) front line.
The report notes that identifying a suitable replacement remains a challenge, given the limited number of senior officers with the experience required to lead Ukraine’s wartime military.
Separately, the Financial Times reports that Zelenskyy is continuing his search for a new Ukrainian ambassador to the United States. Former Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko remains the leading candidate, although she reportedly declined the position earlier this week. According to the newspaper, Zelenskyy is still attempting to persuade her to accept the appointment.
No decision on the position of Commander-in-Chief has been officially announced by the Ukrainian government. If such a change were to take place, it would mark one of the most significant military leadership reshuffles since Syrskyi succeeded Valerii Zaluzhnyi in February 2024, with potentially far-reaching implications for Ukraine’s defense strategy as the war continues.
