MILITIA SUSPECTED OF PLOT TO OVERTHROW GOVERNMENT ARRESTED IN LUSAKA.

Police have arrested suspected militia members and other persons of interest following a joint security operation in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area.

The operation, conducted on August 13, 2026, involved security agencies acting on intelligence concerning a group that had allegedly been under surveillance for several years, with heightened monitoring in recent months.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa confirmed the arrests, saying the operation was carried out after security agencies gathered information that raised concerns about the activities of the individuals.

According to Mr. Kangwa, the suspects were apprehended at a premises in Kabulonga as security agencies moved to prevent what is being described as a potentially serious threat to national security.

The developments have raised questions about the alleged intentions of the group, particularly amid the heightened political tensions surrounding the 2026 general elections.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of all those arrested or provided full details of the evidence recovered during the operation.

Investigations are continuing as security agencies work to establish the full extent of the alleged activities, the people involved and whether there were plans to destabilise the country.

Mr. Kangwa has assured the public that the security agencies remain alert and will take all necessary measures to protect the peace, security and constitutional order of the Republic of Zambia.

The arrests come at a particularly sensitive time for the country, with authorities urging members of the public to remain calm and rely on verified information as investigations continue.
