FINLAND COMPLETES 200-KILOMETER BARRIER ALONG RUSSIAN BORDER
Finland has completed approximately 200 kilometers of reinforced fencing along strategically selected sections of its border with Russia, strengthening one of NATO’s longest and most exposed frontiers.
According to Yle, the project cost approximately €365 million and extends through 17 municipalities, from Lapland to the Gulf of Finland. It combines a 4.5-meter metal barrier with surveillance cameras, lighting, loudspeakers, cleared forest corridors and a parallel road allowing border patrols to respond quickly.
The barrier covers about 15% of Finland’s 1,340-kilometer border with Russia. Rather than attempting to fence the entire wilderness frontier, authorities concentrated construction around crossing points and areas considered most vulnerable to organized mass entry.
Finland began pursuing the project after accusing Moscow of facilitating the movement of migrants toward its border as a form of political pressure. The purpose is not conventional military defense, but reducing Finland’s dependence on Russian border controls and giving authorities greater control during attempted hybrid operations.
Approximately 1,000 landowners were affected by the construction and received nearly €3 million in compensation.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has steadily transformed Finland’s security policy. The country joined NATO, closed its eastern crossing points and has now completed a permanent surveillance barrier designed for a threat Helsinki no longer considers temporary.
