FODEP TO RELEASE ELECTION FINDINGS WITHIN 48 HOURS OF POLLS
The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says it will release its preliminary findings and observations within 48 hours after the close of polling and the declaration of the official results of Zambia’s August 13 General Elections.
The announcement comes as the election observer group prepares to deploy approximately 1,200 volunteer monitors across the country to independently observe the electoral process.
Speaking during a media briefing, FODEP said the preliminary report will be based on observations made by accredited volunteer monitors stationed at polling centres in districts across Zambia.
The organisation said the monitoring exercise will focus on the integrity of the voting process, electoral incidents and the transparency of results management, with observations supported by officially declared and publicly posted polling station result forms.
Despite failing to secure funding for its traditional nationwide election observation mission, FODEP said it has adopted a lean volunteer-based model to ensure it continues contributing to credible elections.m
The organisation noted that while the exercise will not provide nationally representative statistical coverage, volunteer monitors will be deployed in areas where they have been accredited and will operate in accordance with the ECZ and FODEP Codes of Conduct.
FODEP has since called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), political parties, the Zambia Police, civil society organisations and the public to cooperate with its monitors and support peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
The organisation said its preliminary post-election statement is intended to provide timely observations on the conduct of the elections as Zambia awaits the official outcome of the August 13 polls.
