FORMER JCTR DIRECTOR FR. PETER HENRIOT, SJ, DIES AT 90
The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) joins the Southern Africa Province of the Society of Jesus (Southern Africa Jesuits) in mourning the passing of Fr. Peter Henriot, SJ, who died on Saturday, 12 September 2026, at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Centre in Los Gatos, California, USA. He was 90.
Fr. Henriot served as Director of JCTR for 22 years and became a prominent voice in Zambia’s conversations on poverty, debt, economic justice and development. Through his ministry, he brought together faith, social analysis and practical action in the pursuit of justice and the service of the poor.
He also co-authored Social Analysis: Linking Faith and Justice with Joe Holland, a work that developed the pastoral-circle approach to connecting social analysis, theological reflection and pastoral action.
In his later years, Fr. Henriot continued his commitment to social transformation through his work supporting Loyola Jesuit Secondary School in Malawi, helping mobilise resources to provide opportunities for young people.
His legacy lives on in the institutions he served, the people he accompanied, the ideas he shared and the many lives touched by his ministry.
JCTR extends its deepest condolences to the Society of Jesus, Fr. Henriot’s family, friends, colleagues and all who mourn his passing.
