France Offers India Major $34–39 Billion Rafale Fighter Deal
France has reportedly submitted a formal government-to-government proposal to India for the sale of 114 Rafale fighter jets, in what could become one of the largest military aviation deals in India’s history.
The proposed agreement is estimated to be worth between $34 billion and $39 billion, reflecting not only the cost of the aircraft but also associated weapons, infrastructure, training, maintenance and industrial cooperation.
Under the reported proposal, 20 Rafale fighters would be delivered directly from France to help address the Indian Air Force’s urgent requirement for additional combat aircraft.
The remaining 94 aircraft would be manufactured in India, supporting New Delhi’s long-standing push to expand domestic defense production and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
A key element of the proposal is reportedly India’s preference to equip the Rafale fleet with the Astra air-to-air missile, an indigenous weapon developed by India for beyond-visual-range combat.
Integrating the Astra missile with the Rafale would represent a significant step toward combining French combat aircraft with Indian-developed weapons technology, while potentially strengthening India’s domestic defense industry.
The proposed purchase comes as the Indian Air Force faces a long-standing shortage of fighter squadrons and seeks to modernize its combat fleet amid growing strategic competition with China and continuing security concerns involving Pakistan.
For France, the deal would further strengthen its position as one of India’s most important defense partners. India already operates Rafale fighters acquired under an earlier agreement, giving its air force experience with the platform and potentially simplifying logistics and training for an expanded fleet.
If finalized, the agreement would also deepen France–India strategic and industrial cooperation, particularly in aerospace, advanced weapons, technology transfer and defense manufacturing.
The reported proposal now sets the stage for negotiations over pricing, production arrangements, technology transfer, weapons integration and delivery schedules before any final agreement is concluded.
