FRANCE VOWS RESPONSE AFTER FRENCH CULTURAL CENTER CLOSED IN TEHRAN
Diplomatic tensions between France and Iran are escalating after Iranian authorities ordered the closure of a French-language cultural institution linked to the French Embassy in Tehran.
The facility is not a primary school, despite some translations circulating on social media. It is a cultural institution dedicated to teaching the French language.
Iranian authorities said the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office ordered the closure because the institution was operating without the required license and allegedly engaged in activities deemed contrary to Iranian culture and national security.
Iranian officials have accused the institution of identifying and establishing contact networks and of facilitating the departure of qualified professionals from Iran.
France has rejected the accusations, describing the closure as “unjustifiable and unacceptable.” Paris said it would summon Iran’s ambassador and take “appropriate measures,” although it has not yet specified what additional steps could follow.
Tensions were further heightened after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot issued a message marking the fourth anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, whose death while in police custody sparked widespread protests across Iran in 2022.
A separate issue has also caused confusion. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi referred to the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in Minab, which was reportedly targeted during a U.S. attack in February 2026. That school is separate from the French cultural institution that Tehran ordered closed.
Despite the escalating accusations, Barrot and Araghchi are scheduled to meet on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Their meeting is expected to take place against the backdrop of the closure of the French institution, recent incidents involving French diplomats and the broader deterioration in relations between Paris and Tehran.
France’s decision to summon the Iranian ambassador is expected to be its first diplomatic response, with further measures potentially to follow.
