Gas Pipeline Fire Forces Russian Explosives-Chemical Plant to Slash Production to Minimum

A major gas pipeline fire in Russia’s Siberian Kemerovo region temporarily forced the Kemerovo Azot chemical plant to reduce production to minimum levels, disrupting operations at one of the country’s major producers of industrial chemicals used in explosives manufacturing.

The incident occurred on November 5 in the Topkinsky municipal district, where a rupture in a main gas pipeline triggered a fire and caused gas pressure to drop.

Kemerovo Azot confirmed that its production units were temporarily operating at minimum capacity to ensure safe operations. The facility manufactures ammonium nitrate and nitric acid, chemicals used in both fertilizer production and the manufacture of explosives.

The disruption was short-lived. Later on November 5, the company reported that gas pressure had stabilized and production units had begun restoring output after reserve pipeline connections were brought online.

According to local authorities and Interfax, the plant continued restoring production capacity from November 6, with operations expected to return toward planned levels by November 9.

The full production losses caused by the incident have not been disclosed. Authorities say the cause of the pipeline rupture remains under investigation, and there is no confirmed evidence of sabotage.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of industrial supply chains supporting Russia’s chemical and military-industrial sectors to disruptions in critical energy infrastructure.
