GHANA TO FUND TRAVEL FOR MOTHER OF TEEN KILLED IN NEW YORK
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says the government will cover the travel costs of Doris Adu Gyamfi, whose 15-year-old son, Javits Frimpong, was fatally shot in New York.
Ablakwa said officials were helping her with the visa application process so she could travel from Ghana to say goodbye to her son. The government is also prepared to contribute towards his funeral.
His announcement followed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s statement that President Donald Trump had agreed to grant her a visa immediately after their telephone conversation.
Mamdani said no parent should have to endure the loss of a child from thousands of miles away. The White House had not independently confirmed the arrangement when AP initially reported it.
Javits was shot while walking to school in the Bronx on October 29. He had moved from Ghana about a year earlier to join his father and dreamed of becoming a doctor.
His father said he had suffered bullying at school, although police have not confirmed a connection to the killing. 💔
