Global Shift Away from U.S. Military Dependence
The world’s reliance on the United States for military cooperation appears to be declining.
🇰🇷 South Korea President Lee Jae-myung has told South Koreans that the country must now move toward greater self-reliance in defense.
South Korea has maintained a long-standing military alliance with Washington since the division of the Korean Peninsula. However, U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by criticizing the annual joint U.S.–South Korean military exercises, calling them costly and unnecessary.
Trump’s positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite the long-standing conflict between North and South Korea, has also raised concerns in Seoul.
🇪🇺🇺🇸 Meanwhile, military cooperation between Europe and the United States is facing growing tensions, as European countries increasingly debate greater strategic and defense autonomy.
🇸🇦🇦🇪🇶🇦🇹🇷🇵🇰 In the Gulf, several states are also exploring new military partnerships amid concerns over Washington’s regional policies and its close alignment with Israel.
This environment could create new opportunities for Turkey and Pakistan to expand their defense partnerships, while Russia currently appears less capable of filling the same role due to its own military commitments.
The global security landscape is shifting and traditional alliances are being tested.
