GOVERNMENT ITSELF MAY BE GREATEST OBSTACLE TO JOB CREATION – MTONGA

UPND member George Mtonga has questioned whether government itself could be the greatest obstacle to job creation and economic expansion, citing challenges faced by businesses in Zambia.

Mr Mtonga said his observations and engagements with businesses had prompted him to examine whether government regulations and institutions were making it difficult for businesses to operate and create employment.

He identified the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) as a common concern among businesses he had spoken to, while also questioning the need for multiple health inspections by different institutions.

“The greatest obstacle to creating jobs and expanding this economy is the government itself,” Mr Mtonga said.

“And for the health inspections..  why have 3.. the council, the ministry of health and clinics.. a hospital inspecting a business. Why?”

He said the numerous challenges had raised concerns about why entrepreneurs would want to establish businesses under a system he described as restrictive.

“Business environment kwati ninkondo!!” he said.

Mr Mtonga called for extreme and precise reforms over the next five years to improve Zambia’s business environment and promote job creation.
