GUTERRES: “AFRICA REMAINS A DOUBLE VICTIM OF COLONIALISM”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said Africa continues to suffer the consequences of colonialism into the 21st century, arguing that the continent still does not have a role in global affairs that reflects its demographic and economic importance.
Guterres also criticized Africa’s limited representation in the multilateral institutions that shape global governance.
“Africa is a double victim of colonialism,” Guterres said. “First, because of colonialism itself and what it caused. We can talk about the transatlantic slave trade and many other aspects in which the African continent was sacrificed.”
He added that African countries were largely absent when many of today’s international institutions were established, leaving the continent underrepresented in the global system.
