President Hakainde Hichilema has thanked Zambians for returning him to State House after a bruising presidential contest ended with a 1,109,109-vote victory over Brian Mundubile, giving the incumbent a fresh five-year mandate.

The final presidential figures put Hichilema at 2,965,326 votes against Mundubile’s 1,856,217. The result closes an election in which the opposition mounted a formidable challenge across former PF strongholds and parts of urban Zambia, but ultimately failed to contain the enormous margins accumulated by Hichilema elsewhere.

“We are truly humbled by the trust you have placed in our hands, to hold our nation’s highest office and to be your servant, once more,” Hichilema said in his first Facebook statement following the final result.

The President framed his victory as a reaffirmation of Zambia’s electoral democracy after days of tension surrounding the count. “This election showed the world who we are: a nation of peace, a nation of law and order, a democratic nation that settles our differences at the ballot box, and nowhere else,” he said.

His message also reached across the political divide. Mundubile collected more than 1.85 million votes, representing a substantial opposition constituency which Hichilema must now govern alongside those who returned him to office. “To those citizens who preferred the ideas presented by our opponents, we hear you,” the President said, promising development for every Zambian.

Hichilema said travelling through all 116 districts during the campaign had brought him face-to-face with the pressures confronting households, businesses and communities. His response after victory was not to declare the work complete. “Now we must work harder than ever before to deliver meaningful development for every single Zambian, in every corner of our country,” he said.

The final margin confirms a pattern The People’s Brief tracked as constituency results accumulated. Mundubile fought strongly across much of the old PF electoral belt and challenged UPND in important urban centres. Hichilema, however, defended his strongest regions with crushing margins while collecting enough votes in hostile territory to prevent Mundubile from building the national advantage required to remove an incumbent.

The campaign has now surrendered to arithmetic. Hichilema has the presidency. Mundubile has demonstrated the existence of a sizeable opposition vote. Zambia’s next political argument will be about what both sides do with those mandates.
