MPs! HOW MUCH ARE ZAMBIANS SPENDING TO SUSTAIN 276 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT?
K1.86 BILLION OVER FIVE YEARS — BEFORE SITTING ALLOWANCES AND OTHER BENEFITS!
An MP earns about K54,000 per month, plus K2,500 for each parliamentary sitting, while gratuity can run into millions after five years.
For 276 MPs, the basic mathematics is staggering:
– K178.8 MILLION — annual basic salaries
– K894.2 MILLION — salaries over five years
– K966 MILLION — K3.5 million gratuity for 276 MPs
= K1.86 BILLION — salaries + gratuity over five years
And remember: sitting allowances and other benefits are not included in that K1.86 billion calculation.
The question for citizens is simple:
How much should taxpayers spend maintaining Parliament while ordinary Zambians continue struggling with the rising cost of living?

Which constituencies are they going to look after? Or they are just going to debate in parliament?
What a waste of resources. How many school, clinics, hospitals, roads etc can be built with that money. How many pensioners can be paid. How many new teachers, medical personnel, police etc can be employed to serve the people on the ground. How many medicines can be bought to save lives. Instead of reducing the number these people have instead increased it to add another burden on the already burdened person.
