‘I AM MINISTER BECAUSE OF UPND’ — SIAME

Newly appointed Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Dr. Gilbert Siame, says his appointment is a result of his long-standing association with and commitment to the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Dr. Siame said this when he paid a courtesy call on UPND Secretary General Mr. Batuke Imenda at the party Secretariat in Lusaka today.
He said he recognises the important role the UPND plays in providing the political foundation upon which the Government’s policies and development agenda are anchored.
Dr. Siame said he needs the support of the party to effectively execute his responsibilities as Minister, adding that he is deeply rooted in the UPND and remains committed to supporting President Hakainde Hichilema in delivering the Government’s development agenda
He said his priority is to contribute to the implementation of the Government’s programmes in line with the UPND manifesto and the President’s vision for Zambia.
“The policies come from the UPND manifesto, and I cannot succeed if I do not attach myself to the party,” Dr. Siame said.
He said there is a mutual relationship between the party and those serving in Government, stressing that the party needs him just as he needs the party’s support in delivering his mandate.
And Mr. Imenda commended Dr. Siame for being the first newly appointed Minister to pay a courtesy call on the party Secretariat.
Mr. Imenda said the visit demonstrated an appreciation of the relationship between the party and Government, expressing concern that some Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Directors only remember the party Secretariat when they need adoption.
He said Government officials should recognise the importance of maintaining strong relations with the party structures that support the implementation of the UPND’s development agenda.
Mr. Imenda further observed that party leaders sometimes face difficulties accessing Government offices, saying some officials appear to forget the role played by the party leadership.
He thanked Dr. Siame for taking the initiative to visit the Secretariat and pledged the party’s support to his ministry as he undertakes his responsibilities.
Also present during the courtesy call were UPND Chairman Mr. Collins Maoma and Vice Treasurer General Ms. Loveness Malambo.
