IAEA WARNS OF SERIOUS NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION CONCERNS OVER IRAN
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reportedly been unable to verify Iran’s declared uranium stockpiles for more than a year, including its uranium enriched to 60%, at nuclear facilities damaged by military strikes.
Speaking on Monday during the opening of the IAEA’s 70th General Conference, Director General Rafael Grossi warned that the lack of verification represents a “serious proliferation concern.”
Grossi said the international community is increasingly worried about the risk that Iran could acquire a nuclear weapon, amid continuing uncertainty over the country’s nuclear activities and the status of its enriched uranium stockpiles.
The IAEA has reportedly conducted no on-site verification activities in Iran for more than six months, with the exception of an inspection at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
The developments have intensified concerns over the transparency of Iran’s nuclear programme, particularly following damage to several nuclear facilities. Tehran maintains that its nuclear activities are peaceful and has consistently rejected allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
